GearOnce you've been fencing for a little while, it's nice to get your own equipment. It fits, you can wash it as often as it needs, and it's always available when you need it. Plus, many equipment vendors offer great deals on beginner kits. Look for packages including a jacket, a glove, a foil, a mask, and a bag to put it all in. Once you start competing, you'll also need an electric weapon, a body cord, and if you fence foil, a lame. Everyone has a different opinion on the best vendor to buy from. Ask around at practice and shop around online. The USFA (United States Fencing Association) keeps a list of vendors on their website. Fencing stores are few and far between, so most fencers order equipment through the mail or purchase it at the bigger tournaments, where vendors set up booths. Prices and quality vary between vendors, and it's especially important to get a solid, well-made mask. Sizes, too, vary between manufacturers, so you might want to try on other fencers' jackets and gloves to get a feel for what fits best. ! | Photos go here |
